Installation of Marine Hatchery
KENYA MARINE AND FISHERIES RESEARCH INSTITUTE (KMFRI)
Description
aquaculture research, improve fish breeding capacity, and increase availability of quality fingerlings to support coastal fisheries. With a starting production capacity of 1.5 to 2 million fingerlings annually, focusing on prawn and rabbit fish (locally known as kamba and tafi respectively), the hatchery is set to transform aquaculture practices in the region and stimulate marine economic activity along the coast. Key Outcomes and Impact Employment: The hatchery has already created 60 direct employment opportunities, with potential for more as operations expand. Production Start: Two species, prawn and rabbit fish, are currently being bred with strong prospects for commercial and research applications. Local and National Impact: The project is expected to: i. Enhance marine aquaculture research. ii. Empower coastal communities through job creation and skills transfer. iii. Reduce reliance on wild fish stocks by supplying hatchery-grown fingerlings. iv. Promote food security and blue economy
