PU Bioscience Research Center
PWANI UNIVERSITY
Description
The project was designed to transform the institution into a regional center of excellence in biosciences by upgrading its research infrastructure. The investment facilitated the establishment of a fully equipped bioscience research laboratory, a high-performance computing environment to support bioinformatics, and specialized facilities including a functional insectary, a semi-field arena for vector biology studies, a greenhouse, and a small animal house. These resources have enabled high-impact research in molecular biology, disease vector control, and agricultural sciences. The project also enhanced the university’s capacity for long-term sample preservation through the installation of advanced cold storage and biosafety systems. As a result, the university has expanded its research portfolio to include wildlife genomics, plant sciences, and infectious disease research, while also attracting regional and international postgraduate students, thereby strengthening its academic and scientific footprint across East Africa. i. Over 20 research grants supported by the infrastructure ii. Dozens of postgraduate students trained, including 10+ annually in bioinformatics iii. International research collaborations (e.g., EMU, Sweden, Belgium, Uganda, Tanzania) iv. Hosting of international short courses and workshops in genomics and molecular biology v. Establishment of cold-chain systems (deep freezers, biosafety cabinets, environmental chambers) supporting sample longevity and quality research vi. Equipment-enabled digitized research, such as NextGen sequencing, is now viable on campus vii. Collaborative policy development underway for bench fees and access by external institutions
