ICT Research hub

Kibabii University, Bungoma.

Description

This project was initiated to transform Kibabii University into a regional center of excellence in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) research, innovation, and training, in alignment with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the Digital Superhighway agenda. Supported by a KES 64.6 million grant from the National Research Fund (NRF), the university established a state-of-the-art ICT Research and Innovation Hub comprising five specialized laboratories: a digital forensics lab, professional software development lab, mobile computing lab, video conferencing and e-learning studio, and a fully equipped data center. These facilities were fitted with advanced tools and technologies such as forensic analysis kits (FRED, VIMPA), biometric authentication devices, surveillance gear (spy pens, wall cameras), and forensic software platforms to enhance training and real-world investigative capability. The ICT Hub supports postgraduate programs such as the Master of Science in Digital Forensics, with cohorts already enrolled and accreditation processes underway. In addition to academic training, the Hub incubates innovations, facilitates patenting, and nurtures university-industry linkages by offering exhibitions, boot camps, and commercialization pathways. Its impact extends beyond the university, contributing directly to national cybersecurity preparedness, youth digital skilling, and the decentralization of high-end ICT capacity to Western Kenya.
